My BSW internship at the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services (MDHHS) has played a significant role in preparing me for generalist social work practice. Throughout this experience, I have developed a deeper understanding of how to engage with clients, assess complex situations, and respond in a professional and ethical manner. Working with children and families in crisis has strengthened my ability to apply core social work values that we have learned so much about - such as empathy, integrity, and advocacy in real-world situations.
One of the most important ways my internship has prepared me for generalist practice is by helping me build strong communication and engagement skills. I have learned how essential it is to meet clients where they are, listen without judgment, and build trust even in difficult situations. This aligns with generalist practice, which requires working with diverse populations and adapting your approaches, based on your clients needs. I have also gained experience collaborating with interdisciplinary teams, community resources and services, along with my fellow interns, which has been a key component of my learning within the social work practice.
Additionally, my field practicum experience has strengthened my professional growth immensely these past two semesters; through supportive feedback and guidance, I have learned to view mistakes as opportunities for learning rather than failure. This has helped me build confidence, improve my decision-making skills, and become more open to growth and development. I am also learning how to navigate challenges such as self-doubt and emotional stress, which are very common in this field. Working in CPS can be emotionally demanding, and I have learned that maintaining my well-being is essential to being effective and successful in my role as a social worker. Starting these habits now will only support my long-term sustainability in this field.
Overall, my BSW internship has provided me with the foundational skills, self-awareness, and professional values that are necessary for generalist social work practice. It has prepared me to work with individuals, families, and communities while continuing to grow and adapt as a new, developing social worker.
