Competencies

Competency 1: Ethical and Professional Behavior

One competency I have developed through both my classroom and internship experience is demonstrating ethical and professional behavior.

In my coursework, specifically the SOAP [Subjective, Objective, Assessment, Plan] Note Project from my Social Work Practice I class - we practiced making non-biased decisions that prioritize our client’s well-being, maintaining boundaries, and following the NASW Code of Ethics. This assignment helped me think through an actual real-life scenario and understand how to respond in an ethical and professional way.

During my internship at MDHHS CPS, I have applied this by being super mindful of confidentiality, completing documentations extremely carefully, and asking for guidance when I am unsure of something. For example, I never submit any documentation within our government database without double checking it first by myself and again with my supervisor. This also helps me understand that professionalism means being honest, accountable, and open to feedback on your mistakes.

Competency 6: Engage with Individuals, Families, Groups, Organizations, and Communities

Another competency I have developed includes engaging with individuals, families, groups, organizations, and communities.

Within the classroom, I have learned engagement skills such as active listening, building rapport, and meeting clients where they are. Through role plays, projects, and in-depth class discussions, I practice how to communicate effectively and respectfully with several complex and diverse populations. Some great specifics include my Community Assessment Project from Social Work Practice II class, along with my Cultural Community Event and Cultural Group Presentation from Foundations for Multicultural Social Work Practice class.

During my internship, I have been able to apply these skills in real-life situations when interacting with children and families involved in the CPS [Child Protective Services] system. For example, I have learned how important it is to build trust with clients, especially when they may feel nervous, overwhelmed, emotional, or even defensive. By staying calm, respectful, and nonjudgmental, I have learned how to create more positive interactions and encourage the family’s cooperation to work with us. These experiences have helped me feel more knowledgeable and more confident in my ability to connect with clients and support them in an impactful way.
